"The Girl Who Gets Rushed to the Emergency Room" is the third episode of cycle 1 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on June 3, 2003, and garnered 4.10 million viewers.

Episode

Eight finalists undergo radical transformations; participants share the spotlight with snakes during a photography shoot; a finalist ends up in the hospital.

The episode opens with Adrianne being shocked that Katie was eliminated, and Elyse thinks she's taking the competition too seriously. Nicole reveals that she is dating BMX rider named Cory Nastazio. There is a montage of her calling him, but having no answer.

Makeovers

The girls arrive at The Lapin Salon where Tyra is waiting. She introduces Jay Manuel, who will be teaching the girls makeup, and Kim Lapin, owner of the salon. Tyra then announces the girls makeovers.

Nicole was upset because she paid $1,500 for the extensions right before she left. Robin hated the idea of going black to brown. Jay says that they should do it because its best for their career. Nicole complained so much that the stylist didn't chop off what was originally intended. Giselle wasn't a fan of the length. Elyse thought it as fine, but she wanted to change the color. Ebony hated the process, with the stylists not having the right clippers, and the hairdresser didn't cut it correctly. Shannon, Kesse and Adrianne all liked their new hair. Robin had a diva attitude and didn't think the color worked for her.

When the makeovers are complete, Jay teaches the girls on makeup looks, using Revlon cosmetics, he gives them one look for day and one for night. His tips include how to put on false eyelashes, don't match your eyeshadow with your gown, moisturize your skin, and be friendly to the makeup artist. Ebony says she's a makeup artist.

The girls go back home, and Ebony is furious about how her hair is uneven. She goes on a rant about the unprofessionalism from the salon, with Robin, Elyse and Shannon cackling around her. Nicole calls her mom because she still can't reach Cory. Jay greets them the next morning, and gave the girls big bags of makeup. He also ridiculed Ebony, Nicole and Robin for their poor attitudes. He then tells the girls they will meet with stylist Derek Khan, and they will have a challenge. They have to make their day look at home. They travel to Madison Avenue, and they are all in awe of the expensive clothes and jewelry. While shopping, Robin buys a pair of boots worth $795.

Challenge

The girls are all lined up in a mirror at another store, and Jay comes in with more Revlon bags. He says the girls have to create an evening makeup look with the cosmetics. The winner gets to attend an Indian Consulate function. Ebony matched her outfit with her eyeshadow, Adrianne did decent, Elyse looked good, Nicole needed practice, Giselle didn't bronze her face correctly, Robin did good, and Jay is shocked, Shannon had her lashes on backwards, and Kesse needed more smoky eye.

Jay selects Elyse as the winner, and she gets to pick three friends. She chooses Nicole because she gave her scissors, and Adrianne because she gave her mascara. She asked if anyone's mothers' maiden name start with a G, and Robin raises a hand. Nicole feels sick and decides not to go, and Jay ridicules her again, reminding her of the thousands of girls who would want to be in her place.

The winners meet with Anand Jon, Count Maximillian Tucci, Janice Combs and Constance White. Constance loves Adrianne's natural sexiness, she thought Elyse's look was best for runway, and Robin was interesting because she was plus-size.

Back at the house, Nicole finally reaches Cory after six days. He tells her he hasn't tried to call her, and Nicole says he's not being a supportive boyfriend. He's being mean to her because he's insecure with her being in New York with other men, and Nicole says his reverse psychology won't work on her.

The next morning, Jon Silverman returns, and has the girls do workouts. He thinks Adrianne is in the best physical condition. Robin was late, and Jon has her sit on the wall. She was slacking and cheating on some of the sets.

The girls arrive at a studio where Tyra is waiting again. She announces that this is the week of beauty shots, but they will be extreme. The photographer is Troy Ward, and he reveals that they will be posing with snakes. Adrianne is excited while Robin is terrified.

Robin is the first to shoot. She is freaked out at first but calms down. Troy thinks she looked too frozen. Elyse was aware of her body, Kesse did good, and Troy liked her doe-eye look. Ebony needed retouching for her skin, and Shannon was better on camera than in person. Giselle had a very exotic look, but she didn't think she looked pretty. Nicole's biggest fear is snakes, but pulls through. Troy thought her facial expressions were limited. He liked Adrianne the most, and would be the most likely to book. After the photoshoot, there is Tyra Mail at home.

Tyra Mail: Tonight, a catered meal at home so you can relax. Tomorrow, seven of you will continue on to become America's Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated...

The next morning, Adrianne got sick to the point of shivering. She had to be sent to the hospital, and she was diagnosed with food poisoning. Tyra in confessional said that Adrianne has to be in judging or else she would be eliminated, because it wouldn't be fair to the other girls.

Judging

Jay Manuel is the guest judge, and he announces a judging challenge. The girls have to recreate a makeup look from one of Tyra's photos. They will have twenty minutes, and they have to be as accurate as possible.

• Adrianne: Janice commends her for showing up, and they think her makeup is good. Her photo is praised across the board.
• Kesse: Kimora loves her hair in the look. Janice thinks she looks scared in her photo.
• Nicole: Beau thinks her look was a good try, but Kimora says she went to simple. She loves the photo, but Tyra says it was difficult to pick a best photo because there was no life in her eyes.
• Elyse: She was too conservative in the makeup. Her photo is gorgeous, and it was her type of sexy.
• Shannon: Her look was messy, but Beau thinks she did a good try. Her photo is praised overall.
• Giselle: Tyra hates the makeup. Beau and Tyra love the photo, but Giselle thinks its too plain.
• Robin: The makeup is praised unanimously. Kimora loves the photo, but Jay comments on her bad attitude at makeovers.
• Ebony: Tyra thinks its conservative like Elyse, but Jay notes her improvement. Janice says there's no similarity to the photo. Her picture was the hardest to retouch.

At deliberation, they commended Adrianne showing up again, Nicole doesn't want to be there, Giselle's confidence is questioned, Ebony's skin is harsh and makes her look old.
